Inanna
is the Sumerian Goddess of the earth and fertility. Inanna
descended to the underworld, passing through seven gates to confront
the darkness and her dark sister Eriskegal. At each gate, piece
by piece, Inanna
removed an item of her clothing and jewelry until she was naked.
After her descent, she hung for three days and nights until she
was reborn. Inanna
has since become known as the Goddess of death and rebirth.
