Uzume
(pronounced oo-zoo-may) is the Shinto goddess happiness and fun. She is called
Heaven's Daughter by the Japanese people and her name means "whirling".
Also the goddess of health which is derived by drinking the blessed water from
her streams.
When
the Japanese Sun Goddess "Amaterasu" hid in a cave, making the world
barren and covered in darkness, Uzume drew her out by performing a bawdy dance
that made fun of shamanic ritual. By exposing her breasts and playing with her
genitals, she created an uproar that piqued Amaterasu's curiosity and she came
out from her cave thus bringing light and life back to earth.
