Freya
or Frayja is the Queen of the Valkyries and wife of the powerful
Norse god Odin. She is the goddess of love, beauty, marriage and
wealth - associated with divination and sexual freedom, also called
The Sage and Freyja of the Black Swordhand. At the end of the
Winter Solstice, when the days began to lengthen, Frayja sat at
her spindle weaving the destiny of humans and was thus has been
linked with new beginnings.
In
Northern Europe, New Year's eve is the longest night of the year
and is called "Mother Night." During this dark night
the goddess Freyja gave birth to Baldur, the Sun God who ruled
the sun and rain and gave fruitfulness to the fields. Freya
is invoked for her blessings for birthing women with a white candle
burned during the winter solstice as a ritual to ensure a safe
delivery.
